Like the book, a better first half than second half. Still draws too much from All The King’s Men and not enough from the actuality of events on the Clinton campaign. Better to stick with The War Room. The real James Carville leaves Billy Bob standing.

Pretty to look at but not something you can engage with in any way at all.

Either this is a pile of shite or it’s interestingly allegorical in the way it tells a story of a bunch of khaki-clad Americans with a gung-ho mentality and little forward planning who end up having to liberate a bunch of sand rats from an evil and tyrinical dictator. At first they’re greeted warmly by the sand rats, then they’re not made so welcome, until finally enough sand rats get killed for them to realise that they’d better support their liberators or they’ll soon all be dead. And then, once liberated, the Americans leave. But not without leaving behind one of their own to make sure those sand rats do as they’re supposed to do.

Oh God, a liberal’s wet dream of a film. The prison is basically America and Redford is seeking to save it both from itself and from the evil forces of darkness (ie those reptilian Republicans).

Jimmy Stewart, who always seems too damned nice, is just too damned nice to be the bad-ass he’s meant to be here.

Korean clockwork ultraviolence. I bet it was all just a death dream and he’s still in his Kafkaesque prison cell.
