In some ways, the whole easy riders, raging bull generation dates back to Beatty’s take on Bonnie and Clyde. And yet the biggest film of his generation was The Godfather. Which he turned down. So was Bugsy just a piece of star-studded hubris on the part of Beatty? An attempt to out muscle Coppola’s mafia epic with his own version of the story?
