Woody Allen does Castro. Or even Chavez, if you want to argue Allan’s foresight.

Pug Mitchum gets all laconic as an aging Philip Marlowe in this neo-noir. Not the worst attempt at filming Chandler (Michael Winner probably holds that record, with Pug again being the dic) but far from ideal. The look is almost right – none of the glitz and glamour, everything looking dirty and run down (except the sidewalks) – but too much else is wrong, particularly the sickly sweet sentimentality. And the notion that a 58 year old Mitchum could be cast against a 29 year old Charlotte Rampling. And be allowed to kiss her on screen. Yeugh.

Trivia tip #1: Sly Stallone features in a non-talking role.

Trivia tip #2: Jerry Bruckheimer produces, way back before he teamed up with Don Simpson and patented their high concept, high octane, high nrg formula of jiggling titties and the erection-inducing power of mucho-macho flying machines shot in front of a flame-red sun.
